During the Baroque era white donkeys were kept as status symbols in many royal and aristocratic castle and country house parks. Today, the animals have long given way to an indispensable leisure accessory for many people: the bike

It is an excellent idea to bring your bike, road bike, trekking or mountain bike with you as a guest at the Schloss THALHEIM hotel to explore the immediate and wider surroundings of the Mostviertel region close to the Danube with its gently sloping hills and charming scenery near Vienna and the Wachau region. The beautiful cycling routes, including stages of the Danube cycle path, are guaranteed to enrich your holiday in Thalheim. And if bike tours are not sporty enough for you: the Lower Austrian alpine foothills around Schloss THALHEIM also offer great mountain bike trails and other leisure activites such as golf or tennis.

Danube cycle path, stage 6 – North bank: Krems-Tulln

Coming from Schloss THALHEIM you start in Krems, a beautiful town that is part of the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way to your interim goal in Tulln you can take a detour by bike into the Kremstal valley or you can reach the Wagram region by continually cycling along the Danube. Vineyards nestled into each other, undulating fields, shady narrow passages and deep loess soils that provide the best conditions for mellow, full-bodied wines that characterise this region – Grüner and Roter Veltliner are the keywords here. 50 top winegrowers are represented with more than 250 wines at the Vinothek Weritas in Kirchberg am Wagram. At the end of the day, Tulln is also home to Europe's unique ecological "Gartenerlebniswelt" with more than 60 show gardens and other attractions. Additionally, numerous cultural sites and the Egon Schiele themed trail honour the life and work of this town's most famous son.

Danube cycle path, stage 6 – South bank: Mautern-Klosterneuburg

This cycle tour along the beautiful Danube cycle path leads you from the town of Mautern, which was already popular with the Romans, to Klosterneuburg. First of all you cycle through the picturesque Danube valley until the Tullnerfeld basin lies ahead of you. This region is rich in scenery and habitats, delicious treats and specialities, art and culture. Continuing east you are then accompanied by Vienna Woods' chain of hills that come up really close to the riverbank near the bend in the Danube at Greifenstein. A secluded Danube back water tempts you to get off your bike and bath in the cool waters here in the summer. From there it is not much further to the wine town of Klosterneuburg now, just outside Vienna.

Franz Schubert cycle path with lots of wine taverns

On this cycle path near Schloss THALHEIM running parallel to the Danube you can experience both: nature and culture. As a holiday guest the starting point is less then 15 kilometres away from our hotel entrance in Thalheim. The Franz Schubert cycle path starts at the Traismauer marina and consequently leads through idyllically situated villages and charming scenery with the well-known "Ahrenberger" and "Eichberger" wine cellar lined roads where numerous wine taverns tempt you to stop by all year round. As the Franz Schubert wine path merges into the Danube cycle path, you can get back to Traismauer on this route as well.
